Statistics for the Shannon Trust

4th August 2005

  1. Number of Prisons/Establishments
    1. Of all the prisons in England, Wales and Northern Ireland only 9 have had no contact or copies of Toe by Toe
    2. A further 24 have had no contact with the Trust in 2005
    3. We are also operating in all STCs (bar 1) and in 6 places within the community mostly YOT and hostels

  1. Number of Mentees
    1. The number I can verify of mentees currently on the programme is 954
    2. I would have every reason to believe this is about 50% of the true number based on the number of books distributed and the constant change and flux

  1. Number of Mentors
    1. The current number of mentors that I can verify on the programme is 583
    2. These are supplemented in some YOIs and STCs with Learning Support Assistants as often in the juvenile estate they do not trust the offenders to be mentors.
    3. Also within YOTs Advocates teach using the manual on a one to one basis
    4. Again I would have realistically thought that we could increase this number by at least 50%

  1. Other FACTS
    1. We have distributed 5099 manuals (till 31st July 2005)
    2. We have a credited 891 graduates (which I would again have no hesitation in saying represents 50-100% short of the true figure)

All the above figures I have documentation to back up, however the vagueness of the true total reflects the movement of prisoners and the difficulty in focussing attention on our project.  Regularly we have little gems of information written to us by inmates who seem to be running the scheme on their own or suddenly you speak to a prison where you think they have 2 graduates and it turns out to be 20.  We are well aware that more hard data collection should be a priority.
